We can learn a lot from the elite athletes at the Commonwealth Games & their recent heroics. Guts, determination & hard work are key ingredients to a successful competition/race/achievement. I often talk about consistency being a key part of training and when you are consistently working hard the results will come. The amazing runs of Jess Trengove & Michael Shelley in the marathon display the guts required at the top level, which we can all take some motivation from. They both came back from behind to claim medals, and both benefitted from believing in their training & running their own race plan. Having done the hard work & put in all the hours of training they knew they could run a PB… from there anything was possible.
Train like an elite with;
Smart training.
This is two-fold, train specifically for your goal to get the best results. Use the services of a personal trainer to write a plan with specific exercises to reach your goal. And utilise SMART goals. Specific, Measureable goals that you can plot along the way. This leads right into our next point of;
Working towards your goals
Long term training plans, with milestone challenges or races will help you plot out your training, keep track of your progress and allow you to tackle a truly big goal. Don’t get caught up in the world of 12week transformations. The truly huge dreams take years or more. It’s definitely possible… but it does take planning & preparation & hard work to make it a reality.
Belief
Of course our elite athlete heroes have plenty of belief, and this is something most of us need when we start dreaming big & chasing big goals. Putting together a long term plan, with smart training principles will help you gain some belief, then every now & then you need a little motivation. Surround yourself with positive people, find inspiration another strong people who have overcome great obstacles & go out & conquer whatever is in your sights. Like so many others, i’m inspired by Nelson Mandela & Pat Farmer, but even more so by many ordinary people everyday fighting challenges many of us don’t even know. Take stock of your community & create your strong belief in yourself. You’d be surprised how many people you’re inspiring. Britain’s Steve Way is one such person. If you haven’t heard his amazing story of transformation look hi up!
Consistency
My favourite that I keep coming back to…Consistent effort, in the right direction, will always yield results. Don’t go at a challenge flat out only to run out of enthusiasm 3 weeks later. Formulate your plan, layout your long term milestones and SMART goals, solidify our belief & work away slowly to achieve something great.
This Mary Anne Radmacher quote says it all
Courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes courage is the little voice at the end of the day that says I’ll try again tomorrow.
Other amazing efforts from the last few days I just have to mention…
The Australian Netballer’s made an amazing come back to beat England by 1 goal.
Australia’s Rugby 7’s came back from 19-0 down to beat Wales 21-19 after the siren. You’ve got to love the drama of sport!
Enjoy the rest of the Comm Games. Here’s to many more amazing moments.
