Only 12hrs to the 2014 Tokyo Marathon and I can’t wait! It’s always the most exciting time, the couple of days beforehand, but it’s also the time I just want to fly past as I start to get a little impatient. There’s always so much to do (especially when you’re away in a foreign city) but I just want the race to be here, the fun to start & the challenge to be underway.
Rather then my usual bowls of fettucine pasta I’ve gone for some local noodles so hopefully the lastminute change will see me well. I’ve been stocking the body with enough of the usual carbs, cereal and milk, low fat yoghurt, low fibre bread (have to say I’m keen to get back to the grainy stuff), a little fruit juice and Powerade as well as a few Allen’s snakes, to feed small school so I should be okay.
The little kid in me wants all the sleeps to be done & my ‘Christmas’ morning to be finally here. I’ve laid out my clothes for tomorrow, pinned on the race bib & checked all the little things. I’m ready! Like I’ve been telling myself for the last couple of weeks, I’m ready. I’m generally positive about the race & it’s definitely the best way to be. All the social media support from friends & family is really nice & definitely helps. And mynephew Rylan’s drawing is a definite favourite. It was worth waiting to open it!
Tomorrow will be like any other run. Well that’s the plan. I’ll still do my normal warm up, all the bum kicks, high knees, side shuffles & leg swings (just like any normal running group) and make everything feel as it normally would. Obviously the weather will change things slightly (they’re expecting 2deg at the 9:10am race start) but I’ve got some warm gear & I’m ready to go.My gloves, arm warmers & thin beanie should keep me warm & I’ve got plenty of fuel. My Spibelt is packed with my GU & Torq gels, and my favourite Mizuno shoes & Injinji socks are ready for 42.2km of Tokyo streets. I’ve also got my planned race splits on my pace band and my secret good luck message from Bob. YCDI (You Can Do It).
I can’t wait…
My top 3 race tips:
- Keep everything the same. Your clothes, race nutrition, warm-up… everything.
- Stick to your plan (pacing, fuel & definitely don’t start too fast
- Enjoy it! Soak up the amazing atmosphere. I usually go for at least half a dozen high fives from the kids (or adults) watching the race. It always give you a lift.
My tip for the Elite race…
I’m predicting Ethiopian rising star Tadese Tola to upset Abel Kurui & the other Kenyans to break Dennis Kimetto’s race record (2:06:50).
