After our recent blogs on Outdoor Gyms I had to post a short blog (while I’m over here on holidays) to show you the great facilities we found when we rode around San Fran. In the park leading to the Golden Gate bridge, (the view wasn’t too bad), we came across this great new equipment. Nearby was the old brown wooden equipment with chin up bars, sit up benches etc that is so common around the world (including Queens park in Sydney). Probably installed in the 1980’s, it’s certainly achieved it’s goal of getting the local population moving but it’s great to see some more money was invested in new equipment. Perhaps the governor of California has something to do with it!? He does like to lift…
The exercise station had music options to help motivate participants & great instructions for those not familiar with what to do or without a plan for their workout. I only got to play on it for a short while but it’s probably the best outdoor gym set up I’ve seen. The only other facility I’ve seen to rival it was a couple of years ago when we were in Santa Monica beach (again in California). The array of travelling rings, climbing ropes & other equipment are fantastic, but this is a bit of a ‘one off’. The travelling rings & climbing ropes would be extremely popular in beach locations like Bondi, Maroubra, Manly & Cronulla. Hopefully we’ll see these in years to come.
Box jumps
Lunges
Agility circuit
Plank & core sequences
Back extension & decline benches (with soft covering) for a variety of back & abdominal exercises.
Push ups bars with a variety of hand positions (close grip, angled, medium & wide) to target the pecs & triceps.
Pull ups & rows of varying grades using a clever graded system where you can change the angle (& therefore the resistance due to gravity) when performing your rows & pull ups.
As we’ve done with our other outdoor gym reviews at Camperdown, Queens Park, Maroubra beach, Sydney Park & Wentworth Park here is a quick workout for the San Francisco gym. Inspired by the 49ers this circuit is 7 rounds of 7 reps (slow & low!)
Lunges with elevated back leg
